Renaissance

This word means re-birth - it refers to a period of time when art and science were felt to be reborn in the spirit of an earlier, Classical period. In began in Italy, particularly Florence, at around 1400 and spread to most of Europe throughout the 16th and 17th centuries. In England it is said to have lasted into the 18th century. Important developments in this period were: the use of oil paint; the introduction of linear and aerial perspective; the development of anatomy and of Naturalism. Significant artists, of which there are many associated with this period, are: Michaelangelo Buonarroti (14751564), Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519). Sandro Boticelli (c.1445-1510) Albrecht Durer (14711528) and Raphael Sanzio (1483-1520).
