Modernism

Much of the art of the first half of the 20th century can be called ‘Modern’. It is characterised by a concern for new ways of representation and the use of new materials. Modernism was essentially rebelling against anything which had gone before; eventually, once Modern art became established, there was a need to rebel against itself - resulting in PostModernism.

Modern art should not be confused with Contemporary art.

Not necessarily abstract art, it usually refers to artwork produced during the latter part of the nineteenth and up to the middle of the twentieth century. Art produced currently is often referred to as Contemporary art.
